The Dark Side of Success: Google in the Courtroom

26th August 2011 |  Written by Steph Goodman

You may know that Google have been taken to the courtroom a few times. It was only on Wednesday that Google had to pay out $500m for publishing online advertising from Canadian pharmacies selling illegal drugs to US customers. As Google have managed to reach a settlement, they will avoid criminal prosecution in the US for profiting from the adverts they published. This $500m represents how much Google made from the adverts and the revenues generated from the actual sale of the drugs.

Google agreed they shouldn’t of allowed the adverts. Although Google stated “We banned the advertising of prescription drugs in the US by Canadian pharmacies some time ago”, they still managed to get onto their state.

With Google’s an army of lawyers, ‘Who dares to take on the Goliath of Internet Search?’ Most of the organisations in the infographic are large multi-nationals including Microsoft and Paypal, but a few individuals have tried and failed, for example a Californian woman tried to sue Google for damages after she was hit by a car while following directions from Google Maps on her cell phone back in May 2010.
