‘Pornography’ Overtaken By Social Networks

27th July 2011 |  Written by Steph Goodman

After finding out yesterday that Justin Butcher had the most read blog, I thought I would choose a topic that more people may be interested in: ‘Porn’ – in a hope to knock him off the top spot. You may think that I’m slightly moving away from the usual digital marketing topics but I am still trying to keep it relevant.

Recent reports have stated that now social networking is more popular than ‘Porn’. The research carried out by internet Research Company Experian Hitwise found sites like Facebook accounted for 12.46% of all online traffic. That’s the equivalent of one eighth of all web visits – 2.4 billion hits. In comparison to this, pornographic sites accounted for 12.18% of traffic. This is the first time that social networking has overtaken entertainment in terms of status. Of those visits to social network sites, Facebook accounted to more than half of 56% of these. Another statistic worth noting is apparently 1 in 5 divorces are blamed on Facebook – I think people need to start being a bit more careful.

Along with finding out this fact I have searched for an infographic just to give you some more information on of this topic. Don’t worry you don’t need to be over 18 to view it and it still has the ‘Google’ logo on to keep us happy:

One Response to ‘Pornography’ Overtaken By Social Networks

  1. Digital Marketing Agency UK says:

Gosh, I knew that pornography was popular but didn’t think it went quite that far. Just goes to show the importance of social media these days from a marketing point. The reach and opportunity is absolutely massive and companies should not ignore it.
