Does a Facebook poke mean anything to you?

15th October 2009 |  Written by Dave Ashworth

Without doubt, Facebook has become a part of every day life for millions of people.  Before getting into SEO and social media I always took it just to be a bit of online banter, a way of interacting with friends and keeping in touch.

I remember back when I first signed up, the “poke” was a bit of fun – someone would poke you, if it was the same sex, you’d wonder why they would do that, if it was a member of the opposite sex, again, you’d wonder why they would do that, perhaps with a touch of optimism.

But it’s just a bit of fun right, the question has been asked on Yahoo and the best answer suggested this was the case.

However, to give an indication of just how ingrained into every day life Facebook and it’s idiosyncrasies have become, a Tennessean woman was recently arrested for poking a friend and thus breaking a protection order which stipulated “no telephoning, contacting or otherwise communicating with the petitioner.”

Frank Skinner once said “I’ll believe anything you say if you start the sentence with ‘In America…’”, that was my initial reaction to this story, but the more you think about it, it’s clear to see social media becoming more and more an accepted part of the way we live our lives.

So what is your attitude towards Facebook and Social Media?  Is it still just a bit of fun to pass the time or do you think it’s an integral part of everyday life for both business and pleasure?  All comments and opinion welcome.

Small business start ups such as Ollie and Darsh, who I would like to say are innovative businesses leaders – together with marketing guru’s such as yourself Guy have quickly recognized the utility of social media (Face book-Blogs-You Tube etc..) as a powerful marketing tool to attract new clients and help build a positive brand image.

It has transformed the way we communicate, there is much more interaction between the creator and the recipient. Its fast, its easy and it positions our companies as cutting edge.”
